Robin's Treat
I know you may be tired of the small pouches, but I couldn't resist making another one. I can't promise this is the last one because they are just so easy and fun to make, and I still haven't posted the cat pouch yet, so be forewarned.
Spring has sprung! Robins are few and far between this year in my yard, but I have seen them on my hikes in the hills nearby. They remind me so much of spring that I had to include one in my designs.

- Sew - These are the instructions for the construction of the back of the pouch. Basic pouch construction directions can be found in Wool Applique Pouch - Flower Variation. Scroll down to the "Basic pouch construction" section.
- AB two-patch - Use the 2 3/4" x 3 1/2" pieces to make this.
- With right sides together, sew fabric B to Fabric A along 3 1/2" edge using a 1/4" seam. Press seam to fabric B. This will form a 3 1/2" x 5" two-patch referred to as AB.
- AC two-patch - Use the 2 3/4" x 3 1/2" pieces to make this.
- With right sides together, sew fabric C to Fabric A along 3 1/2" edge using a 1/4" seam. Press seam to fabric C. This will form a 3 1/2" x 5" two-patch referred to as AC.
- AB two-patch - Use the 2 3/4" x 3 1/2" pieces to make this.
- Pin AB to AC right sides together, and sew together using a 1/4" seam. Press seam open. You should now have a four-patch rectangle. Trim to 5" x 6 1/2".
- Layer the remaining fabric A piece on top of one of the batting pieces (this will be the front) and the four-patch rectangle on the other batting piece. You are now ready for applique.
3. Applique - All stitches are made with two strands of Perle 12 or 2 strands of floss.
- Trace pattern images onto fusible web. Cut out images slightly larger than outline.
- Fuse pattern pieces onto designated wool pieces and cut out along outline.
- Layout ribbon branch, robin, robin's breast, and leaves on front of pouch. You will be trimming the background to 4 3/4" x 6" and then sewing up the sides, top, and bottom with a 1/4" seam, so don't position pieces too close to the edges. Remember to also make room for the branch of berries. DO NOT FUSE YET!
- Remove the robin, robin's breast, and leaves. Pin the ribbon in place.
- Whip stitch ribbon branch with brown thread.
- Replace robin, robin's breast, beak and leaves. Fuse in place using steam.
- Whip stitch all pieces using matching colored thread.
- Draw wing embellishment with a chalk pencil. Back stitch over line with beige thread.
- Use the same thread to make a french knot eye.
- Draw legs and back stitch over lines with orange thread.
- Draw veins of leaves and use a light green thread to make a closed fly stitch over the lines.
- Draw berry stem and use green perle 8 to make a closed fly stitch on the branching portion of the stem. Use the same thread to back stitch the remaining sections of the stem.
- Use the same thread to make two lazy daisy stitches at the base of the berry stem.
- Using the same thread again, make a single lazy daisy and one straight stitch below the small leaf. Use the layout as your placement guide.
- Stitch french knot berries on the end of the stems with red, orange, and brick colored thread.
4. Press appliqued pouch front.
5. Trim pouch front and back to 4 3/4" x 6" making sure to leave room for seams. You may find that you won't trim all sides equally to accomplish this.
6. Follow basic pouch instructions to complete construction of you pouch (see step 2).
7. Enjoy!
