BIRDS OF A FEATHER BOM - BLOCK #4
Hello Everyone! It’s time for block #4 of the BOM. This super simple block is our spring/Easter design.
For those of you just joining in, the supply list and general instructions can be found in the November Block #1 post.
There’s very little embroidery in this block, so it’s one of the easiest of the nine blocks. Because of the simplicity of the design, fabric choice plays a key role. I used a plaid cut on point for my bunny. My friend Nancy (and fellow Wooly Gal), who used a raw edge applique technique, chose a beautiful large scale print for her bunny.
Of course, some of you may want to have a solid bunny that be embroidered with a decorative motif. Whatever you choose, this is your time to put your own spin on the design.
Let’s begin.
Wool requirements - Suggested colors
Bird body - 4 1/2” x 5” blue
Bird wing - 2” x 3” light blue plaid
Bunny - 6 1/2” square pink plaid cut on point
Bunny ears - 1 1/2” x 2” pink
Flower - 2” square yellow
Flower leaves - 2” x 2 1/2” green
Thread Requirements - Suggested colors
Embroidery floss or perle cotton, size 12 in colors matching wool colors
Embroidery floss or perle cotton, size 8 golden brown - Bird’s legs and beak
Embroidery floss or perle cotton, size 8 green - Flower stem
Instructions
Trace the reversed image of the patterns onto fusible web.
Cut out the pattern pieces leaving a small (1/8”) border around each.
Fuse pattern pieces to designated wools, and then cut out along traced lines.
4. Position the bird body, bunny, flower and leaves on the fabric background using the layout as your guide. Fuse in place using steam.
5. Now position the bird’s wing and the insides of the bunny’s ears. Fuse in place using steam.
6. Whip stitch everything in place using 2 strands of floss or 1 strand of perle cotton, size 12.
7. Use a fabric marker or chalk pencil to draw the legs and flower stem. Use the layout as a guide.
8. Use 3 strands of floss or one strand of perle cotton, size 8 to stem stitch the legs.
9. Use 3 strands of floss or 1 strand of perle cotton, size 8 to chain stitch the flower stem. I used a variegated green/brown.
10. Draw the bird’s beak, and then stem stitch the beak using 5 strands of floss or 2 strands of perle cotton, size 8.
11. Use 3 strands of light blue floss, or 1 strand of perle, size 8 to stitch a single colonial knot eye on the bird.
12. Use 3 strands of the same floss used for the legs to stitch a single colonial knot eye, and a cross stitch nose on the bunny.
